Commercial Solar Buyer's Checklist: Fronius 5kW Inverter, Smart Meter Price, and Steps Everyone Forgets

I manage purchasing for a 140-person company. That means office supplies, cleaning contracts, IT refresh cycles, and starting in 2024, a rooftop solar project. I am not a solar engineer. I am the person who builds the spreadsheet, reads the contract, and gets called when the lights flicker.

Most buyers focus on price per watt and completely miss the pieces that make a solar system usable: the smart meter, the monitoring login, the mounting details, and the fire alarm coordination. This checklist is about those pieces. Six steps, in order. Do not skip Step 4.

Step 1: Start With the Inverter, Not the Panels

Panels are easy to compare. The inverter is where decisions get expensive. When you search for a Fronius 5kW inverter, you land on the Fronius Primo GEN24 Plus 5.0. Step 3: Verify the Solar Mounting System With Your Roofer

A solar mounting system is the racking that holds the panels to the roof. It sounds boring until the first rain. The original quote said solar mounting system with no brand and no details. I asked for the make, model, and wind load calculation. The installer said I was the first client to ask for that. (Note to self: ask before signing next time.)

Step 5: Map Out Battery and EV Charging Before You Finalize the Inverter

Fronius sells inverters, batteries, and EV chargers that share one monitoring platform. That was the biggest reason we stayed in one ecosystem. Per the Fronius GEN24 Plus datasheet accessed in January 2025, the inverter supports smart meter integration and battery-ready operation.

We did not buy the Fronius Reserva battery yet, but the wiring and sensor positions are ready for it. If you think there is any chance you will add storage or charging later, buy the larger gateway and the smart meter now. Retrofits cost more and take more time. Step 6: Get the Monitoring Login in Writing

Fronius Solar.web gives you live production data, and it is included with the system. But an installer can set it up under their own master account. You do not want that. We made the monitoring credentials a contract requirement. We also asked for administrator access, not a viewer login.

This sounds small, but it is how you check whether the system performs like the proposal said. I can now see a failed string from my desk instead of waiting for the monthly utility bill.
