I Coordinate Solar Emergencies for Fronius Installers in Adelaide and Sydney. Here's What a Friday Call Taught Me.

Friday, 4:52 PM, late March 2024. My phone buzzed with an Adelaide number I didn't recognize. I almost let it ring out. If I had, a small bakery would have missed its opening week, and I would have missed a reminder about why I do this job.

A three-phase unit can be 11 kW or 22 kW, but the car has to accept it. The SAE J1772 standard says Level 2 AC charging can go up to 19.2 kW, but most homes don't have a circuit that size.

So the honest answer to 'how many kWh is a Level 2 charger?' is: it depends on the charger and the car, but in practical terms, a 7.2 kW unit adds roughly 7 kWh per hour. For most drivers, that's enough to add 40-50 km of range while they sleep.

The small order that mattered

In between those two jobs, a regular customer emailed to ask if we could get her a 20 watt solar battery charger before her long weekend trip. A 20 watt solar battery charger is a small panel with an SAE connector, maybe a hundred and twenty dollars. On paper, it was the easiest order to ignore that week. But she was parked in a caravan park with a battery that kept dying overnight, and she didn't want to risk being stuck.

But I've never understood installers who treat small work as a waste of time. When I was starting out, the companies that took my $200 orders seriously were the ones I stayed with. Today's $120 order is often tomorrow's $20,000 project. That woman is now asking about a full solar system for her house.

What I learned

By Tuesday, Lisa's bakery passed the inspection. The Sydney EV charger was installed before the client picked up his car. The caravan battery survived the trip. And our team now builds a 48-hour buffer into every deadline date that matters.

To be fair, a lot of those Friday-afternoon emergencies are partially self-inflicted. Paperwork sits on desks, approvals take longer than expected, people put things off. I get why some contractors say no. There's a difference between holding someone accountable and refusing to help when it counts.

The lesson I keep coming back to is simple. The equipment matters, but not as much as having the right person who shows up and communicates. And the size of the job matters less than the size of the problem it solves. A Fronius Gen24 for a bakery and a 20 watt solar battery charger for a caravan are very different products. For the people who needed them, they both meant the same thing: things are working again.
